An interesting Cross Media instrument is the telephone. It offers diverse and good possibilities for Website promotion.

The Internet doesn't only bring problems into your daily life, rather it offers new business opportunities. These opportunities require unconventional thinking on your part to harness them.

1.1 What has that got to do with your telephone?

The telephone greeting:
Imagine the following phone call to the company ABC:

Person answering at ABC:  "Good morning, you've reached ABC. My name is John Smith. How can I help you?“

Caller:  „Good morning John. I'd like to speak to someone responsible for technical issues at your company.

Person answering at ABC:  „Yes sir. I'll connect you. By the way, do you know that we have a Website, which is full of useful information about our products and services? Our site is at www.abc.com.

Of course, you don't have to mention the fact that you have a Website every time that someone calls. For instance, your phone can be used to mention specific offers on your Website.

These kinds of short, to the point, telephone advertising techniques can often generate interest in your newest products and services and can ultimately lead to more sales.

1.2 A possible counter arguement:
"That won't work at my company!" We ask you, "Why not?"
Are you truly ready to conduct business in this day and age?

"The people I work with can't do that!" That might be true, perhaps "at the moment" they can't do that. It boils down to this; it's never too late to learn.

Speaking of learning; check out our chapter on "Internal Opportunities: Opportunities within your company".

1.3 Automated Answering Services (and simple answering machines)
If you just absolutely can't warm up to the idea of using your telephone to advertise your Website, there are other technical options available to you. You can include directions to your Website on your answering service or simple answering machine. All you need to do is include the ad in your answering service greeting.

For instance, "Hello, you've reached ABC. Before we transfer your call, we'd like to bring your attention to our Website at www.abc.com. There are many interesting offers and information about our products and services there.

1.4. The desired extension is busy.
How many times have you tried to reach someone by phone only to end up listening to recorded music for five minutes? Fact is, you can use those five minutes to advertise your Website and provide the caller with email addresses to various people within your organization: Example: "ABC has a Website that has information regarding sales, products, services, customer service and other contact information. Please visit our site at www.abc.com.

NOTE: If you have a long or complicated Website address, it is wise to speak slowly and repeat it at least once.
